The halls of Birsa Institute of Technology (BIT), Sindri, resonate with pride as they celebrate one of their distinguished alumni, Dr. Sanjay Kumar Shukla, who has ascended to remarkable heights in the realm of Civil (Geotechnical) Engineering. His journey from BIT Sindri to global recognition stands as a profound testament to the institution’s educational caliber and values ingrained within its walls.

His educational journey commenced with the completion of his B.Tech in Civil Engineering from BIT Sindri, where he was a member of the 1984-88 batch. This pivotal foundation laid the groundwork for his rapid ascent in the field. Dr. B. D. Yadav, Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at BIT Sindri, and a former student(batch of 1986-90) of the institute himself, emphasizes that Dr. Shukla’s journey from the institute’s corridors to global recognition underscores the institution’s exceptional standards. Dr. Yadav further states, “Dr. Shukla’s accomplishments are a reflection of the values and teachings imparted by BIT Sindri. His international journey from our campus is a moment of pride for all of us.” This pivotal step laid the groundwork for subsequent accomplishments, including an MTech in 1992 and a PhD Geotechnical Engineering in 1995, both earned from the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.

Prior to joining Edith Cowan University in 2009, Dr. Shukla served as an Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology BHU, Varanasi Collaborating on a global scale, he engaged with universities, research institutions, and industries, providing solutions as a Consulting Geotechnical Engineer. With over 27 years of experience spanning teaching, research, field consultancy, administration, and

professional engagement, Dr. Shukla’s contribution is monumental. His research prowess encompasses

geosynthetics, sustainable development, ground improvement techniques, earth pressure, slope

stability, and soil-structure interaction. He stands among the top 2% of scientists globally for both

enduring and recent impacts. Recognized as the Brightest Mind of Western Australia, he was honored

with the 2021 ECU Aspire Award from Business Events Perth, Australia. His notable accolades include

the IGS Award (2018) from the International Geosynthetics Society, USA, and the Vishwakarma Award

(2007) from Akhil Bharatiya Vidhwat Parishad, India, among numerous others.

Dr. Shukla’s eminence is perhaps best exemplified by his role as the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the esteemed International Journal of Geosynthetics and Ground Engineering, published by Springer Nature in Switzerland. This publication has evolved into a wellspring of knowledge, offering insights and breakthroughs to researchers and practitioners worldwide. His scholarly article, “Seven Mantras for Research Success,” has captured widespread attention, resonating with budding researchers navigating the intricate landscape of scientific exploration.

Dr. Sanjay Kumar Shukla continues to enrich academic institutions as an Adjunct Professor at renowned establishments including his alma mater, BIT Sindri, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, Delhi Technological University (DTU), Manipal Institute of Technology, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amity University, Noida, Nirma University, Ahmedabad, and VR Siddhartha Engineering College, Vijayawada, among others.
